Writing The Perfect Release

Throughout my internship at my PR firm as well as the classes I have taken in college, I have had multiple trial and errors perfecting the perfect press, news, and new hire releases.

It can be very intimidating and hard to start writing a release. Most people get a form of writer black and struggle in terms of beginning writing their piece.

The first thing you want to make sure you do is to have a clear understanding of what you are writing about, and who your audience is.

Making sure you are directing your writing to the appropriate audience is key. Once you have a good understanding, you're ready to write. If you are writing a press or news release, make sure you come up with a title that is clear and to the point. You don't want to confuse your audience in any way- so it's better to keep it simple.

Next, you want to move on to your body of writing. It is always a good idea to start off by giving background to what you are going to be talking about. Whether that be statistics, any credible background knowledge, or important facts. Always remember to properly cite any sources that you use throughout your release.

Once you have covered your background information, you can move on to your main information that needs to be covered. Any headline information you are given by an advisor or you know needs to be included- this is the place to put it. You want to be sure to allow your structure to have an easy reading flow. Avoid choppy or sentence fragments to allow for an easy read for your audience.

After you have given all the necessary information, it's time to move on to your closer. Your final paragraph(s) should accurately wrap up your release. Restating the important information and encouraging your reader to visit your website or come into your place of business is a good tactic to use. Linking a website URL on your page allows viewers to interactively search and visit your site while learning more about what you have to offer.
